Elizabeth Gaskell’s House
ONLINE EVENTS
The reopening of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House in Manchester has allowed visitors a first look at the author’s reimagined room, lovingly recreated by a group of volunteers during lockdown. Using a 1914 auction catalogue, the group searched high and low to find items as close to the originals as possible, with one particular triumph in the four poster bed attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, who may well have made some of Elizabeth’s own furniture. The room also includes a rare looped carpet, hand-stitched in panels as it would have been in 1860.
