Originally known as Cycling Weekly and still published today, from its first publication under Edmund Dangerfield in 1891, Cycling aimed to appeal to ‘cycle riders in every corner of the world as the first wheel journal to fully illustrate the history of the sport, pastime and trade week by week.’
Over the years, its many campaigns on behalf of readers spoke of the changing face of transport, with arguments about whether driver or cyclist was responsible for a road accident, opinions on campaigns against women’s racing, and even discussions about the rights and wrongs of a case where a cyclist had been prosecuted for hanging a Chinese lantern from the back of his bike.
