Poll books
Introduced by a 1696 Act of Parliament, poll books list the names of those who voted at elections and the name of the candidate they voted for. Also included is the voting qualification (eg freehold, occupier, and so on). Some poll books can include the address and occupation as well.
The books were used in some areas until 1872, when the secret ballot was introduced. Poll books were gradually replaced by electoral registers, introduced after the Reform Act of 1832. Surviving poll books are generally kept at county record offices, with some available online via subscription websites.
