The Imperial War Museums’ (IWM) War Memorials Register, containing the names of more than one million casualties of WW1, is now fully searchable online.
As well as names, the database includes 23,000 photographs of memorials and can be fully searched by surname, memorial, location and more at www.iwm.org.uk/memorials
The IWM currently holds records for more than 74,000 memorials in the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man, with the database including civilians as well as those who served in all wars. Searches can provide locations of the memorial, gravestone or roll of service or plaque where casualties are commemorated, along with biographical details and photographs.
The IWM established the national War Memorials Register in 1989 to record war memorials in danger of being lost, but the project grew to include names collected and recorded by volunteers. The IWM launched the register to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the German Spring Offensive of 1918.
