IS YOUR MOBILE PHONE DAMAGING YOUR FERTILITY?

Did you know that the first steps towards in vitro fertilisation were unwittingly taken in the 1950s by some of the same people who made the pill? Regular advancements - and a few setbacks - came until the birth of the first child conceived by IVF in 1978. Progress continued more steadily after that, with big leaps like being able to freeze and thaw embryos, the injection of single sperms and sperm recovery.

IVF is still a difficult journey but one that represents hope and tens of thousands of babies born each year to happy families. It is a technology that revolutionised the experience and treatment of infertility.

During the same period, however, other technologies and side effects of modern life have been advancing too, and in a more negative way. Progress can be like that. A tit-for-tat game of compensating for new problems, like whack-amole. Faith in progress means that no matter what obstacles life throws at us there will always be a solution in the works. And faith of any kind, when struggling with infertility, is essential.
