SOMETHING IN THE WATER?

Jake Taylor investigates how location, location, location can be a crucial factor in fertility success, and the best places to live if you want to beat that postcode lottery.

On average, about 11% of the UK’s population moves home every year. When deciding to relocate, it’s essential to consider all of the variables– green spaces and crime rates, house prices and potential jobs. When you’re a couple looking into the possibility of IVF, however, any relocation inspiration must be subject to the dreaded ’postcode lottery’, and the availability of IVF clinics across the country.

Despite the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) decreeing that any woman under the age of 40 who has spent two years trying to conceive should be afforded three full cycles of IVF on the NHS, many clinics are still unable to meet these requirements. Whether you’re one of the vast majority of couples across the UK living on average income – around £40,000 a year between the two of you – and taking your first steps into the world of IVF, or you’ve already discovered the pitfalls of the ‘postcode lottery’, you could be forgiven for thinking that the grass may well be greener somewhere else. Is there any truth to the idea that where you live may directly affect your fertility struggle?
