Heavenly Hellebores

Cold winds blowing, icy rain falling, even a blanket of snow; whatever winter throws at us weather-wise, venture into the garden in December and you may well have found a few delicate (and yet they are anything but!) flowers of Helleborus niger glistening in the borders. If you’re like me, you’ll maybe have bought a few pots from the Garden Centre just to add a festive touch near the wreath-adorned front door or on the patio.
‘Evolution’ group – exclusive to Ashwood Nurseries

Fast forward a few weeks or so and the symbolism takes on a different guise; the divine-looking Hellebores become the heralds of spring and now things start to get exciting! The purity of H. niger, commonly known as the Christmas Rose, is joined by almost every colour imaginable and its simplistic beauty might even be forgotten alongside some of the emerging varieties! The flowers, whatever the form or shade, may hang their heads as if sheltering from a winter’s day, but in doing so they brighten borders, light up a shady spot and fill many a gardener’s soul with joy!

About Fusion Flowers

Welcome to Issue 88 of Fusion Flowers magazine which features some of the winning designs in the annual Fusion Flowers magazine International Designer of the Year competition. In fact, the front cover by Harijanto Setiawan of an underwater idea won a Platinum award! We have lots of gorgeous tutorials for you including fresh and new bouquets for Valentine’s Day or even for bridal designs. Find out more about an Even Design workshop in America that saw participants decorating a number of venues to the highest level organised by Tomas De Bruyne and Hitomi Gilliam. Elly Lin demonstrated at the Fleurop-Interflora World Cup in Berlin and our report features a number of her amazing designs. From Japan we report on the Huis ten Bosch floral design competitions which drew huge crowds and attracted some really exciting designers. Lisianthus are normally used for mixed bouquets but in our report from Russia we see how they can be used to create glamorous evening arrangements with the WOW factor! We also take a look at some of the winning designs at the most recent NAFAS National Show in Blackpool and focus on some of the work created on our own stand by Brigitte Heinrichs and Joseph Massie too. It’s a packed issue so why not give a gift subscription of Fusion Flowers magazine to someone you care about.
