A mountain in miniature
Use Saxifraga x arendsii, sedums and other alpines such as sea thrift, Armeria maritima ‘Splendens’, to create an alpine-inspired miniature landscape brimming with vibrant colour – pollinators will love it. These drought-tolerant plants thrive in shallow containers, such as an old stone basin or wooden trough, where you can replicate mountainous terrain with tiered rocks. Position trailing sedum, such as Sedum rupestre, near the rim so it cascades down. Your alpines should start flowering from April.
These plants are low maintenance, enduring high winds and scarce water. Don’t be afraid to divide and transplant them if it gets overcrowded. The plants won’t mind if you get creative with your micro landscape – add a small standing stone and assist drainage at the base with a layer of decorative gravel. Position this container in full sun and it will easily shrug off the elements.
