War on the Home Front

When US soldier Alex Passarello came out to his deeply religious father, he was initially met with love and acceptance. As it should be. But the situation soon changed, as he was told his faith would help him turn straight. Now, Alex has made the painful decision to cut ties with his dad completely and live life by his own rules. Here, he tells us about his struggle with religion and his plans to help others who’re dealing with situations like his own.

When I came out to my father, he told me that he loved me and reassured me that everything was going to be OK. The role of a parent should be a selfless one, and despite his religious beliefs, he made me believe that things really were going to be fine.

A week later, however, I received another phone call from him, and that’s when the questioning began. There was resentment in his voice as he told me that my lifestyle was sinful, and that I didn’t have to be this way. ‘There are people who change,’ he said, pointing to examples of those who found God and were able to ‘become’ heterosexual. There was never any acceptance, just a false sense of hope on my part.
