Dan Mathews

Senior Vice President of PETA

Activism and controversy often go hand in hand, and activists don’t come more controversial than Dan Mathews. As senior vice president of PETA, he’s crashed high-profile fashion shows, convinced countless celebrities including P!nk and Wendy Williams to strip naked for his campaigns, and distributed ‘Unhappy Meal’ leaflets to kids outside McDonald’s describing in graphic detail just how their burgers came to be – all in the name of animal rights.

There’s a noble goal behind the madness, though. When Dan joined the organisation in his early 20s, membership was in the thousands; now there are more than five million PETA members around the world. So what makes for such a dedicated – and successful – activist? Well, there’s one particular memory from his childhood which ignited the fire, and it’s a moment which Dan recalls in vivid detail.
