Pat Patterson

Wrestling legend Pat Patterson has a clear message for fans wondering whether or not to come out. “Stop hiding,” declares the former WWE superstar who retired in 1984 and has just penned his autobiography. “Just go for it. Just be who you are.”

Coming to fame in the 70s, Pat was openly gay within the World Wrestling Entertainment community, but – living in a different, less tolerant era – felt unable to come out publicly. “In those days I didn’t even think about it,” he sighs, then laughs as he adds: “I wouldn’t have dreamed of doing it unless I maybe wanted to be a drag queen.”

Having once dragged up during an entertaining bout against fellow WWE Hall of Famer Gerald Brisco, the now-75-year-old Pat says: “Things have changed a lot. Can you imagine me going to the media and saying ‘I’m gay” back in the 70s? I don’t think I would have lasted too long in the job.”
