Eddie Redmayne

After bagging the Oscar for best actor earlier this year, and with the lead role in the hugely anticipated Harry Potter spin-off on the horizon, Eddie Redmayne is now one of the biggest names on the planet. And the next stop on his road to superstardom? The role of Lili Elbe in the much-hyped The Danish Girl; a beautiful trans love story and one of the most important films you’re ever likely to see.

2015. It’s been called the year of trans. And from Caitlyn Jenner’s arrival to the BBC’s critically-lauded sitcom Boy Meets Girl – starring trans actress Rebecca Root – it’s hard to argue that transgender visibility in mainstream culture isn’t at its zenith.

Next year doesn’t show any signs of slowing down, either. New Years Day 2016 will see the release of the much-hyped The Danish Girl, starring Eddie Redmayne as Lili Elbe – a painter who was born male (with the name Einar Wegener) before going on to become one of the first-known recipients of gender reassignment surgery, transforming into a woman. Directed by Tom Hooper – of The King’s Speech, Les Misérables and, urm, Byker Grove fame – the film traces Lili’s transition from artist Einar, and its effect on Einar’s wife Gerda, played by Alicia Vikander.
