Harvey Fierstein

Sixty-something American actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein has been the voice of generations. Through the likes of Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles, Hairspray, Casa Valentina and now Kinky Boots, the four-time Tony winner is at the heart of changing the world one colourful step at a time. As his musical Kinky Boots struts into a second year in London, it was only a matter of time before we donned the towering red heels and strutted into an afternoon with the creative genius himself.

When you ask actor and playwright

Harvey Fierstein what makes LGBT+ life the ideal subject for the stage, his answer comes back at you fast.

“Theatre is so much about living and living isn’t linear. Everything you write about is everything you know and it’s really true to you. As long as we’re honest about who we are then theatre and gay theatre will continue on.”

Rightly regarded by many as THE number one stage writer for LGBT+ tales, the bona fide Broadway figure has noticeable joined themes of drag, gender identity, sexuality and even the relationship between parent and child throughout his shows; much to his amusement as we point this out.

It takes but a short glance down Harvey’s CV to see quite how he’s helped merge now infamous gay stage literature into mainstream popular culture. Unsurprisingly, not everyone has agreed with such a task.
