Let’s hear it from the Boy

Out gay popstars are more commonplace than when Boy George came to fame in all his flamboyant glory in the 80s, but the singer isn’t sure that’s as progressive as it seems.

“People are out but they don’t celebrate what they are,” says the man who, since offcially coming out himself in his first memoir, has worn his sexuality proudly on his sleeve. “It’s all very like, ‘Yes, I’m gay, please don’t talk about it.’ So I don’t know how much we’ve moved on.”

For now, the trailblazing Boy wants gays to blaze their own trails by talking about it. Only that way will we reach his idea of nirvana. “I’d like the world to be like, ‘Are you nice, are you kind, are you creative?’ And not, ‘Are you gay?’” he elaborates. “A friend of mine was completing a survey online and when it came to ‘male or female?’ he was like, ‘Really? How old-fashioned!’ There’s this strange kind of gender fluidity with young people now – not everywhere, but there are kids who are like, ‘Whatever!’ There’s kind of where I’d like to be.”
