We’re born Naked and the rest is Drag!

Charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent. Adore Delano ’s got it all. It’s why she packed her best wigs and flew to London to take part in our charity naked issue. And now, the city angel tells us all about embracing her hog body, being a sad motherfucker and, of course, Drag Race. If there was ever a time to raise your hands and shout “yaass queen” at the top of your lungs, it’s now.

Who, who does Adore Delano think she is? Who, who? “I’m a fucking Libra,” she howls.

Let’s rewind. We’re at the five star Courthouse Hotel in London and Adore’s putting her clothes back on after bravely baring her “hog body” – her words, not ours!

After grabbing our camera and flicking through the results of her snap-happy session, we ask if she ever feels self-conscious when looking at such intimate photos of herself. It’s what’s prompted her trademark “Libra” catchphrase, followed by a throaty laugh.

“Everything’s always weighted out,” she continues. “Sometimes I look at photos and go, ‘FUCK! I look horrible!’ But then in the back of my mind I’m like, ‘Who cares?’ You can’t go through every picture on Instagram and filter it out. It is what it is, man.”

We all know Adore Delano as the charismatic, charming – if not a little chaotic – runner-up in season six of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Since then, she’s taken the exposure and ran with it, becoming one of the most successful queens in Drag Race herstory. Her genuinely brilliant debut album Till Death Do Us Party was released last year, making her the highest-charting artist of any of Ru’s girls, and has seen her tour the globe to legions of, well, adoring fans.

“I talk to my mum everyday,” Adore says of her now-superstardom, “and if it wasn’t for her, I’d think I was Mariah Carey. But I’m grateful for everything. You can’t say ‘no’ to anything – you just gotta work your ass off.”

Her insatiable work ethic is one reason Adore agreed to strip for us – but it’s not the only one. “People should feel free to wear their fat bodies everywhere,” she proudly proclaims. “There’s enough of these fucking crackerjack-looking bitches on covers of magazines that don’t look realistic. I’m doing it to represent the Danny DeVitos of the world; the people that look like Penguin and act like Catwoman; the people that like to fucking eat cheese and bread.”

She describes one of her shots – with blue hair and no-nonsense snarl – as “mermaid Adore with the body of a whale”, but adds in her laissez-fair way that it’s “all good”.

It’s this kind of attitude that makes Adore Delano a role model to millions of guys and gals – straight, gay and everything in between. The day after our shoot, we catch her sold out show at London’s Clapham Grand, at which she announced she’d just posed naked – for an as-then undisclosed magazine – encouraging the crowd to embrace who they are. All to rapturous applause, of course. Like a preacher motivating a congregation.

And if there’s one thing we can say about Adore’s live show, it’s that gurrrrrrrl, she brings it. Finger snap, finger snap.

We’ve seen our fair share of Drag Race runners-up in some of London’s dive bars, lip-synching show tunes for 20 minutes and reeling off some tired old catchphrases before disappearing with a wad of cash. But Adore is different. On stage, she comes alive, bouncing around like an incandescent ball of energy for well over an hour, connecting with each and every audience member until they’ve well and truly got their money’s worth.

“THEY BUY FUCKING TICKETS TO YOUR SHOW, MAN,” she screeches, waving her arms fervently. “I wanna feel their sweaty faces and I wanna make sure that they have an intimate, personal experience. Even if it’s just for a second, man. You can’t be an asshole to your fans. You’ve got to make sure they experience it and you live up to their expectations. I always wanna be relatable, approachable and make sure I was raised right.”

Need more proof? Look at the way Adore’s been known to send fans money when they’ve been desperate to see her perform.

“For Battle of the Seasons, I bought a lot of people tickets,” she explains, “because they were charging A LOT of money. It literally made me laugh my ass off, because even Gaga wasn’t charging that much fucking money, and you’re seeing a bunch of men who’re shaving their beards to lip-sync. There’s a lot of people that look up to us and wanna come to our shows that are starving students – and it’s bullshit! The other girls were complaining that I was making them look bad – well, that’s not my fucking problem! Cough up some fucking change, you rich whore!”

When it comes to her fellow season six queens, Adore tells us she still speaks to Bianca, Courtney and Darienne every day.

“We have a group WhatsApp group that’s been going for nearly three years now. Not a fucking morning goes by and they’re not all texting – 48 missed texts and I’m like, ‘Shut the fuck up! Get a job!’”

Oh, and naturally, Adore has no hesitation in reading season seven’s line-up to filth: “It was boring. Maybe if Pearl had shown her big, fat penis a bit earlier she would’ve won.”

But while Drag Race is always going to be a beloved part of her past, it’s clear that Adore’s focus is set on the future – with new album AFTERPARTY due out in 2016. “It’s pretty sad,” she says, “but the sad part’s easy, ‘cos I’m a sad motherfucker. I love being sad, man, I’m like the Lana Del Rey of drag.

“I had a good love that I went through last year that a motherfucker would go through in ten years. It made me grow up. I feel like I’m 58 right now. This year I’ve experienced love, heartbreak and a bunch of shit people go through that I wanted to write about. There’s been a delay because I wanted to experience more shit.”

But after all the fun and games, the reason we’re in London with a naked drag queen is to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK. It’s something Adore’s proud to support, too.

“It’s fucking awesome we’re doing this!” she exclaims. “I’m down to do anything for charity, man. There’s been a lot of cancer scares in my family, and I think it’s a really beautiful cause to support, it’s really neat. If I can put on a fucking lash and shake my ass to fucking raise some shit, let’s do it.”

Well, you heard the woman..., @adoredelano
