Departure

Alex Lawther and Phénix Brossard talk us through the most touching coming-of-age film of the year...

It’s the second time Alex Lawther has explored a young man’s sexual awakening – the first time was in The Imitation Game – and he couldn’t be more thrilled at the reaction to Departure. “The response from members of the LGBT community has been one of the big pleasures of being with the film in different countries on the festival circuit,” says the actor, who plays 15-year-old Elliot in the acclaimed coming-of-age drama.

Alex, 21, has been busy promoting the film with director Andrew Steggall, who has previously made short films and who based his first full-length feature partly on his own recollections. “At a screening in Mexico, a teenager came up to us and thanked us,” Alex continues, “because he, as a young gay person like Elliot, had spent a long time ‘waiting to feel human’. I remember Andrew looking at me and saying, ‘Well, that just makes it all worth it, doesn’t it?’”
