Do I Sound Gay?Documentary

For any gay man, it’s a question you’ve either been asked or thought yourself. But the real kicker comes in the self-reflective analysis of why it’s even a question in the first place. After breaking up with his boyfriend, journalist David Thorpe heads off on a rehabilitative trip to Fire Island, only to find his own annoyance at the proximity of so many ‘gay sounding’ men. It sparks a journey of self-discovery that’s as warm and amusing as it is personal. Along the way, Thorpe enlists speech pathologists, acting coaches, friends and an ever-amusing array of talking heads – including George Takei, Tim Gunn, and Dan Savage – to try to determine what constitutes a ‘gay sounding’ voice, whether he can change, and, most pertinently, whether he should even try to. It’s a journey that examines stereotypes, gender identity, bullying and internalised homophobia, and while Thorpe’s documentary may not come to any truly groundbreaking conclusions, it has a whole lot of fun along the way. Do I Sound Gay? is unlikely to tell you anything you didn’t know already, but as a fascinatingly contemplative, playful and heartfelt journey into our cultural identity, it’s an entertaining one.
