God’s Own Country is a tale of two farmhands engaged in a passionate liaison in the great outdoors that many are calling ‘the British Brokeback Mountain’. But, as the film’s writer-director Francis Lee tells Gay Times, the most talked about LGBT+ movie since Moonlight is actually a hopeful love story for a more enlightened time.

The ‘British Brokeback’ thing is something Francis Lee has been hearing ever since God’s Own Country premiered at Sundance in January. “Oh yes, one or two people have mentioned that,” he deadpans before stressing that any resemblance to Ang Lee’s 2005 drama about gay sheepherders is purely coincidental.
