Digital Subscriptions > Healthy Food Guide > April 2017 > NEED to KNOW BARIATRIC SURGERY

It’s a drastic move, but for some it’s the only way to stop the spread. Jennifer Low, a dietitian specialising in bariatric surgery, reveals the pros and cons

When is bariatric surgery appropriate?

BEING OBESE doesn’t automatically qualify you for surgery. You first need to meet all of the following national guidelines set out by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE):

• You have a BMI of 40 or more, or between 35 and 40 plus a significant health condition (for example, type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure) that could improve with weight loss.

• You’ve tried all appropriate non-surgical measures, but not achieved or maintained adequate, clinically beneficial weight loss.
