NATURAL YOGURT is a mainstay of a healthy fridge, but the range of choices now available has made things a little more complicated. Skyr and kefir, for example, both seem to offer nutrition advantages over and above standard yogurts, yet they are quite different in their origins, nutrient content and taste.
Skyr is a traditional Icelandic yogurt made from skimmed milk that’s high in protein and low in fat with a thick consistency. The original Icelandic version contains live bacteria, but the ‘Icelandicstyle’ variations more widely available in the UK don’t have to. If you want to feel satisfied for longer with a zero-fat option, skyr may be one to try.
