So how should you choose which plants to have in your home? I asked Kozaburo if there are certain plants that we should all have in our living rooms, or particular plants for the kitchen, for example, but his advice was surprisingly simple. ‘I think it’s more important to choose plants that match the indoor environment,’ he said. ‘For example, they should match the brightness or temperature of the room they are intended to be placed in. This is highly important for the owner of the plant in order for them to derive maximum satisfaction as the plant grows

The hot list

Here are 10 of the best-performing plants in the NASA experiment:

1 ARECA PALM (Chrysalidocarpus lutescens) A champion among plants when it comes to removing indoor air toxins, this graceful palm is fast-growing and elegant, so it suits a bright living room or an open-plan space. The feathery leaf fronds have a soft, yellow-green tone and grow in flowing arcs that bring a lovely sense of life and movement to a room.

2 LADY PALM (Rhapis excelsa) Another leafy powerhouse when it comes to removing toxins, the lady palm is rather more slow-growing than other palms, so it suits smaller rooms and compact homes. It has thick, glossy leaves that provide a sturdier appearance than the more delicate areca palm. It’s also very easy to maintain, so it’s a safe choice for first-time plant owners.
