YU’LL BE AWARE THAT FIVE IS THE MAGIC FIGURE. It’s the officially recognised daily target for fruit and veg, but if that’s as far as your knowledge goes, you’re not unusual. Studies show that while most people are aware of the 5-a-day message, when it comes to the detail – such as what’s included in the count or what a portion looks like – we know far less.

Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge translates directly into a shortfall of fruit and veg in our diet. Figures from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey reveal that, on average, most of us struggle to get 5-a-day, with adults only managing four portions and teenagers not even three. In fact, a massive 69% of adults and 92% of teenagers fail to hit five. Worse, intakes seem to be falling rather than rising in some groups – for example in 2009, 12% of teenage boys ate 5-a-day; by 2015, this had dropped to 7%.
