Why the big fat lies around saturates?

ANOTHER DAY, another contribution to the ongoing debate about whether we should/shouldn’t be tucking into foods that are rich in saturated fats. Recent tremors came via scientists at the University of Copenhagen who, according to the latest press coverage, were reportedly briefing against the long-established advice of the UK Department of Health that we cut down on foods rich in saturated fats

On reading headlines like ‘Ditching saturated fats may do more harm than good’, you could be forgiven for thinking the Department of Health has got it wrong and is lagging behind scientific advances. Yet the message from Copenhagen, as is often the case in the world of nutrition, is only part of the picture. The crux of their argument is the subtle message that some foods containing saturated fat can be good for us.
