Our level of happiness seems to have a direct efect on how well our bodies function. For example, it’s been shown that happier people have a lower heart rate – about six beats per minute slower – than unhappy people. Tests also show that increased happiness leads to lower blood pressure, a more robust immune system and a much lower chance of sufering from chronic pain. Happy people are also more likely to take better care of themselves, exercise regularly, avoid unhealthy foods and get regular medical check-ups.
