THIS IS THE TIME OF YEAR when shelled walnuts come into their own in festive cakes and stuffings or on cheeseboards… Not to mention the unshelled nuts filling bowls and attached to wreaths.

Nutrition-wise, however, walnuts have year-round bragging rights. That’s mainly because they contain more plant-based omega-3s than other nuts. This makes them particularly heart friendly – a benefit recognised by health bodies here and in the US. Emerging research is now looking at the wider benefits of walnuts for our gut and brain health, as well as their contribution to weight loss.
