Christmas isn’t just about show-off, indulgent foods – it’s also a time for fresh POMEGRANATES, BRUSSELS SPROUTS and CRANBERRIES to move centre stage

They may be one half of the famous festive duo (turkey and cranberry sauce, that is), but it pays to get creative with these fruits. The trick? Keep free sugars to a minimum.

Nutritional reasons to buy

These little berries are too sour to eat raw, so a lot of sugar is usually added to make them palatable, when stewed, dried or made into cranberry juice drinks. But prepare them yourself (see the suggestions below), and you can enjoy their nutritional benefits without adding lots of extra sugar to your diet. Naturally occurring anthocyanins in cranberries have been linked with healthier hearts, plus there’s a little evidence that they may help to stop urinary tract infections recurring.
