What’s the deal with VITAMIN D?

YOU MAY KNOW that vitamin D is essential for bone health, but it can also protect against heart disease, diabetes, dementia and depression, and can help us fight infections, says dietitian Juliette Kellow.

Yet around a fifth of UK adults have low blood levels of vitamin D. We make it when our skin is exposed to sunlight, but the sun’s UVB rays are too weak in the UK from October to March. This means 30–40% of Brits have low blood levels of vitamin D in winter, compared with just 2–13% in the summer.
