We all want to appear as healthy on the outside as we feel on the inside – and it’s easier than you think to find hair, beauty and body treatments without busting your budget, says Leah Hardy. You just need to know where to look

The bargain hunter’s BEAUTY SECRETS

The desire for professionalstandard pampering is no longer felt only by the rich and famous. Most of us now consider looking our best to be part of our general wellbeing – enough to pay over the odds for it. It’s estimated that women in Britain spend around £70,000 on their appearance over the course of a lifetime, and one survey calculated they spent an average of £994 on treatments last year alone. And men aren’t far behind – according to the Financial Times, the men’s grooming market is worth almost $50 billion globally. But looking groomed is possible without the big spend. With so many brands vying for your custom and all the online competition, beauty companies have had to up their game. Many treats, treatments and tutorials are inexpensive or free for those with a little insider knowledge. Here’s how to get the beauty boost you deserve – on a budget

Fabulous facials

TOP TIP Salon facials can cost up to £200, but skincare brands are increasingly offering in-store facials in brand boutiques or department stores. They may be free, a fraction of the price of their salon equivalents or redeemable against purchases, so it makes sense to book a treatment whenever you need to replace a favourite product.

•Science-based skincare brand MURAD offers free express treatments, including a super-relaxing 30-minute facial, and personal skin assessment using YouthCam technology (some salons charge as much as £30 for this analysis alone). Murad also offers an in-store 30-minute anti-ageing facial or a glycolic peel for £30. Go to to find a department store near you.

•LIZ EARLE ( offers 15-minute mini facials at all its counters using its award-winning skincare range, including the Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser (the one you may have heard all the fuss about). You could leave with some free samples, too.
