’I just want to keep fit, to feel good and be strong ‘

Dame Kelly Holmes, now a motivational speaker and the founder of her own charity, became a national treasure when she made history by winning gold in both the 800m and 1500m metres at the 2004 Olympics. She talks to HFG about how she’s dealt with her mental health demons, and why she loves quinoa, smoothies and popping up at parkruns just for fun

HOW I STAY HEALTHY

Tell us about your new book – who is it aimed at?

It’s called Running Life: Mindset, Fitness & Nutrition for Positive Wellbeing, and it’s about helping people to reach their true potential and become the best version of themselves – I call it motivational living. Deep down, I think everyone wants to achieve. We all have drive and ambition to some degree, although that doesn’t mean we’re all going to be high-level Olympians. I wanted it to be a coffee-table-type book that you could flick through if you’ve had a bit of a bad day, to help you put things in perspective. Hopefully, the book will resonate with lots of different people. Obviously, being a runner myself, I think running is great for people. Whether it’s slow or fast doesn’t really matter – it’s a good mindset. I’m involved with parkruns, which are about improving your fitness at whatever level you’re at. You can walk it or run fast, but it’s about the social interaction, too.
