The fastest fat burners FOR EVERY AGE

Becoming a leaner, healthier, happier you means regular exercise. We’re not talking triathlon training (unless you’re up for it). The trick is to find an efficient technique to burn fat, whatever your age and fitness level, says Hannah Ebelthite

IN THIS ISSUE, you’ll find everything you need to kickstart a new healthy living plan – or continue with an existing one. And a crucial part of the health jigsaw is fitting in some exercise you enjoy.

Regular exercise will help you reach any weight-loss goals sooner by burning calories and therefore fat (the average person needs to cut their daily calorie intake by around 500 to lose 1–2lb a week). You’ll also be helping to improve your general health – physical and mental – and lowering your risk of disease.

By choosing the optimum exercises for maximum fat burning, you’ll see results faster and feel more motivated to continue. We asked fitness experts for an effective plan for every age group.

The perfect mix

‘Plodding away on a treadmill or doing a hot-yoga class is fine, but to burn fat faster you need to mix it up’, says fitness trainer Julia Buckley. ‘The science behind fat burning is the same whatever your age, but it varies from person to person.’ The ideal workout will include higher intensity interval training (HIIT), strength training (to develop muscle mass) and steady cardio (aerobic exercise to work your heart and lungs).

HIIT workouts (where you do more intense bursts of exercise, but only for short intervals interspersed with rests) are great for fat burning – which occurs both during and after the workout. ‘That’s because we push ourselves beyond the level of exercise we could sustain for longer periods, which requires a lot of fuel’, explains Julia.

Is age just a number?
