THE THYROID is a butterflyshaped gland in the throat. It regulates metabolism, the chemical processes in the body that create energy.

Thyroid conditions affect around one in 20 people. Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), where not enough of the thyroid hormone (thyroxine) is produced, affects 15 in 1,000 women and 1 in 1,000 men. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), where too much thyroxine is produced, is less common, affecting around 1 in 2,000 people. Dr Mark Vanderpump, consultant endocrinologist at The Physicians’ Clinic in London and a spokesman for the Society for Endocrinology, says: ‘Women are 10 times more likely to develop an underactive thyroid than men-20% of females have a genetic predisposition to a thyroid disorder.’
