Imagine a world where health is determined by how you feel rather than measurements and numbers. HFG investigates a new movement that recommends ditching the scales

Many of us can relate to being hung up on what the scales say and wanting to be thinner. Indeed, it can feel as if everyone is nudging us to lose weight – family and friends, perhaps our GP and practice nurse, usually with the kind thought that we’ll be doing our health a massive favour and making our life better or happier than before. The result: an obsession with what we eat and how much exercise we do, coupled with constant guilt and stress about our body size and shape.

It was US researcher Professor Linda Bacon’s personal experiences of this that prompted her project and subsequent best-selling book, and this led to the growing social movement of the same name: Health at Every Size (HAES).

‘I used to have this idea that If only I were thinner, everything in life would be better for me,’ says Linda, who has degrees in physiology, psychology and exercise science, plus a speciality in nutrition. ‘As a teenager, I became convinced that I would be more popular if I weighed less. That I’d be happier somehow.’ But diets and obsessive exercise made her miserable, and after developing an eating disorder, she certainly wasn’t any healthier.
