Back when I was playing rugby, food was just fuel for me. I had to eat loads of calories, but I had no interest or connection with food. My diet was devised for me to maximise performance, but I didn’t engage. I was often in a state of high anxiety and would seek solace in sweet things and reward myself with chocolate (massively overdoing it sometimes).

These days I enjoy my food. My wife Shelley is studying for a Masters in nutrition so we get to eat healthily, and meal times are a lot more relaxed. Shelley makes her own sourdough bread and is really into fermented foods such as kombucha, the fizzy fermented ‘tea’. It takes more time and effort, but we love to cook together and talk about what we’ll be eating. And that can still include the odd Indian takeaway…
