Keep a tally on calories by avoiding anything not clearly labelled. A small innocentlooking slice of victoria sandwich cake in Pret has well over 400 calories, and muffins everywhere are often close to 500 calories, regardless of any healthy-sounding ingredients such as bananas, seeds and bran. Include drinks and snacks, too, when calorie counting.
