When the PANCREAS goes wrong

You probably haven’t given it a second thought, but the 6in long, pearshaped gland tucked deep behind your abdomen is essential to good health. Unfortunately, it’s been making headlines recently for all the wrong reasons

YOUR PANCREAS is a hard-working organ that pumps out digestive juices and produces the insulin crucial for regulating our blood sugar levels. If you develop pancreatitis, the pancreas becomes damaged, swollen and inflamed. Fortunately, this condition can be treated – although it does mean changing your diet and lifestyle habits (see p30).

Top of the list are keeping your weight in the healthy range to lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and exercising, which helps with weight loss and lowering inflammation.

More serious is the development of pancreatic cancer, as this usually remains undetected until it has reached an advanced stage. In the past two years, the disease has made headlines because of some high profile celebrities who have developed it – actors John Hurt and Alan Rickman and This Morning agony aunt Denise Robertson have all succumbed to pancreatic cancer.
