They say women don’t do team sports, yet more of us than ever are having a go at netball. Hannah Ebelthite looks at the benefits for grown women of rediscovering the ‘schoolgirl’ sport


MOST OF US PLAYED NETBALL at school. But unless you reached a particularly high level, the chances are you haven’t picked up a ball since you were in your teens. Yet thousands of adults are discovering the game’s potential as a fun, inclusive team activity that can do as much for your confidence and social life as for your fitness.

We may be yet to see a game of netball at the Olympics, but its profile has never been higher, with the number of people playing the game at record levels. In England alone, over 30,000 players have taken part in the sport over the past year, and grass-roots participation is up by 44%. Fancy joining them? Here’s why you should give it a try.

Top-to-toe workout

Netball is great for all-round fitness. ‘It provides a fantastic cardiovascular workout for your heart and lungs,’ says Cornwall-based coach Louise Conway. ‘You work through all planes of motion – forwards, backwards, side to side, up and down – and it will strengthen your legs, glutes, core, upper body and arms.’ The game helps maintain bone density, too – particularly important for women as we age and our risk of osteoporosis increases.
