ASANDWICH AT YOUR DESK is all very well, but as the days get colder, those cravings for a hot lunch start to kick in. If this usually means a ready meal you can pop in the office microwave, it’s worth looking at the ever expanding range of healthy grains, rice and lentils appearing on the shelves. They can be ready in even less time (on average, a pack heats in 1.5 minutes) and prove that microwave options don’t need to be high in calories, fat, salt and a long list of unwanted ingredients.

So why are these ready-to-heat pouches so popular? Well, they’re easy and versatile. Try heating half a pack at lunch to enjoy with a healthy salad, then serving the remainder topped with a chicken breast or tofu and veg for dinner. Most of these pouches are low in calories and saturates, yet higher in fibre and protein than basic carbohydrates such as white bread or potatoes. This means that when consumed at lunch, you’ll feel fuller for longer and avoid the slump starchy carbs can cause.
