You’ll be relieved to know there’s no need to go on a silent retreat, find religion or chant ‘Om’ to give meditation a go. ‘You don’t need any equipment, it’s free and can be done anywhere and at any time,’ says Sophie.

If you go for regular walks, runs or swims and use the rhythmic, repetitive motion to still your mind, you’ll know the feeling. Others find doing a creative pastime (such as painting, pottery, gardening or cooking) empties their mind as they become absorbed in the activity. ‘What you’re seeking is a place of stillness in the mind that sets up a chain reaction in the body,’ says Sophie. ‘Once people develop the skill of meditation, they find they want to do it more and more as it makes them feel good.’
