After the hysterectomy I went into full-blown menopause

HOW I STAY HEALTHY

Liberty X singer and one of the stars of TV’s The Real Full Monty, MICHELLE HEATON, 38, experienced a premature menopause at 35. Like actress Angelina Jolie, she was diagnosed with the BRCA2 gene and opted for surgery

I discovered I had the BRCA2 gene for breast and ovarian cancer when my daughter Faith was six weeks old. I’d had a blood test after my dad’s mum was diagnosed with breast and ovarian cancer. My great-grandmother had died of ovarian cancer, and my dad was identified as a carrier for the gene mutation. I was given an 80% chance of developing breast cancer and a 40% chance of developing ovarian cancer. I was 32.

Six months later, I had a double mastectomy. Then, three years after that, when my son AJ was six months old, I had a hysterectomy. This put me into a premature menopause at the age of 35.
