healtyfood BEST of health AWARDS 2019

MEET THE JUDGES Our experts testing snacks and drinks (clockwise from top left): Juliette Kellow, Melanie Leyshon, Phil Mundy, Rory Larkin, Liz Atkins, Amanda Ursell, Dawn Harper, Jennifer Low and Tina Betts

After months of judging and tasting, we’re delighted to reveal the food and drink products that bring together nutrition benefits and deliciousness. Here are this year’s star products…

THERE HAVE NEVER BEEN SO MANY products available for the health-conscious customer, says HFG nutrition editor Amanda Ursell. As if to prove the point, a bumper number of products were entered into our 2019 Best of Health Awards. Our expert judging panel, headed by Amanda, tasted and analysed their way through hundreds of foods, drinks, powders and fresh produce to find this year’s winners.

‘Whether you’re trying to lose weight, eating for a special diet or looking for vegan meals, there’s something for everyone,’ says Amanda. However, she says, don’t assume special-diet products – vegan or free from gluten or dairy – are automatically healthy. ‘Check labels and look for green and amber traffic lights. The shorter the list of ingredients, the better. If sugar (in any of its forms) is high on that list, it’s a warning sign.’

Current strong sectors? ‘Gut health and sleep, plus healthier snacks,’ says dietitian Jennifer Low. ‘Supermarkets are driving innovation in lower-sugar, lower-fat ready meals, too,’ she says. An emerging category is CBD, with more people experimenting with this legal cannabis-related product in foods to combat stress, anxiety and pain (read more on p24). Last but not least, many of our winners are investing in technology to find more sustainable packaging, too.

Here’s our line-up of 2019 winners…
