We already know that eating a fibrerich diet reduces the risk of developing cancers, particularly bowel cancer, now researchers have looked into their possible role in cancer progression and treatment. A team of scientists has found that combining prebiotics (think dietary fibre), and probiotics, reduces the expression of pro-carcinogenic and drug resistance genes, potentially impacting the growth of cancer cells. It was a lab study, but is yet more evidence to add to the ever-growing plethora of research that shows what a major role the microbiome has to play when it comes to staying healthy. Bring on the salad!
