HEALTHY PROMOTION
During pregnancy you may have had the most lustrous hair of your life, so it can be a shock when it starts to shed a few months after giving birth. It’s important to remember hair loss is completely normal. Around 17 per cent of women in the UK experience it – and post-pregnancy thinning is a leading cause among younger women. The hair growth has three phases – the growth stage, which lasts three to seven years, a 10-day transitional stage and a three-month resting period, after which the hair sheds. Rising oestrogen levels during pregnancy prolong the growth phase, meaning less hair falls out. When your hormones revert back after birth, the hair that was meant to have fallen out, all comes out at once. Senior consultant trichologist Trisha Buller explains all about post-pregnancy hair thinning and the emotional impact it can have on sufferers.
