What is it?

As the name suggests, milk thistle is a prickly plant with a purple flower that’s usually found in Mediterranean countries. Its active ingredients, a group of antioxidant flavonoids called silymarins, are extracted from the seeds and are believed to help protect the liver.

Preparations of milk thistle have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years and people claim it can treat liver and kidney disease, accidental poisoning, diabetes, cancer and low fertility, though supporting evidence is scant.
