1 Conflict control

Change seating plans, give people different roles, make plans to get out of the house, celebrate somewhere neutral or invite different friends over.

You’ll have familiar triggers, too; someone is interrupted or talked over, which sparks a row about underlying annoyances like power or favouritism. Swap kneejerk reactions for a deep breath and a calm response, and give your harshest critics (‘Oh, you don’t make your own cranberry sauce?’) a role so they feel important. Call ahead and make a clear request, such as, ‘I love your mince pies, can you bring a batch?’ And don’t be on such high alert that you misinterpret conversations.
