Most of us have tried a diet at some point, but how many of us would say we were ‘on a diet now’? Or are we more likely to say we’re flexitarian, plant-based or we’re just eating well? There’s been a shift, and these days the idea of counting, cutting and deprivation isn’t appealing. We’re better informed, with stats about nutrition just a click away, so we’re less easily duped by marketing. It’s no surprise, then, that a late 2015 Mintel report asserted that ‘the diet industry faces downward pressure as [people] remain sceptical of the ingredients in diet-specific products and their effectiveness in managing weight.’

‘People are gaining awareness that things that look too good to be true, are too good to be true,’ says dietician Helen Bond. ‘Now the focus isn’t just about losing weight, we also want to know how a diet will affect our bodies, we want research-based evidence, and many of us also want to know how it will affect the planet, hence the rise of plant-based eating.’ And it’s a massive rise; nearly a third of under-35s now say they want to try a vegan diet.
