Social situations can feel pretty gruelling to a nation known for our quiet reserve, but with around 9 million of us saying we feel lonely ‘always’ or ‘often’, getting out of our own heads and into the swing of things can only be a good thing. ‘Most of us are born with a tendency to be shy’, says Gillian Butler, associate of the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre and author of Overcoming Social Anxiety And Shyness (Robinson, £12.99). ‘Many of us grow out of it, but around 80 per cent of us go through a stage of shyness, and it seems to come back when we’re feeling uncertain about ourselves.’ That ‘stage of shyness’ could be down to a change in life circumstances: a new job, returning to work after having a baby, a break-up or it could simply be a tendency towards shyness, or being naturally introverted. Whatever the reason, Butler has the following techniques to help you not just get through but actively enjoy a more sociable summer.
