How the Netherlands fell prey to 'Tulip Mania'

Despite their long-held association with Holland, tulips were not introduced to the Low Countries until the mid-16th century. It all started when the Holy Roman Emperor’s Turkish ambassador distributed bulbs to Northern Europe, and it was soon discovered that the Netherlands provided a perfect environment for the intensely coloured rarities to thrive. Within a generation, the blooms and their bulbs were fast becoming a new status symbol for the Dutch.
