Back to the futurein a Victorian tenement

Learning how to utilise free family hand-me-downs alongside contemporary bargains is the secret to Katherine Cory’s unique first home

Welcome to my home

A bit about me

I’m Katherine Cory and I live with my husband Will and our five-month-old Jack Russell puppy, Ivy.

Where I live

Our home is a top floor Victorian tenement flat in Glasgow, dating back to 1907.

What I wanted to change

The decoration and flooring mainly, as both were a real eyesore. The orange skirting and doors and acid-green wallpaper in the hall were not a good look.

How I made it my own

I tried to take a creative approach to furniture hand-medowns from family and make them work with modern pieces.

My favourite part

The big bay window in the living room is the best bit. I work at the table next to it during the day and at night we eat there and watch the world go by. It’s our window out onto the world.

About Homestyle

I always feel incredibly lucky that it’s part of my job to go around the country visiting beautiful homes to shoot for the magazine, and this month was particularly special. I was so inspired by the home of Gigi Eligoloff (this month’s cover girl, see page 16). She has filled her small London home almost entirely from lost and second-hand treasures, yet the result is a relaxed and surprisingly sophisticated style that can’t help but make you smile. She really ticked the HomeStyle box when we discovered she had bought her entire kitchen on Gumtree for £900! Another showstopper this issue is the upcycling feature – turn to page 85 right now for the most stunning cupboard revamp. It’s proof that breathing life back into things other people don’t want can create items that will be treasured for generations to come. And if you’re about to embark on your own makeover, don’t miss our top trend hot list on page 74 – with these ideas, you won’t just be one small step ahead of the crowds, you’ll be one huge HomeStyle leap!
