SUPER NOVA
If ever a rider stood by the adage “never judge a book by its cover”, it was Spencer Wilton. “Carl Hester was riding Super Nova in a demo at Badminton the first time I saw him, and I remember thinking that he was rather ugly,” recalls Spencer. “But at only seven, he did have an amazing piaffe.” Two months later, Carl called Spencer to say “Neville” was for sale and that he believed he’d suit Spencer. “I immediately rang my friend Jen Goodman, who was about to become the first person I’d asked to buy me a horse,” Spencer explained. Neville and Spencer’s relationship quickly developed, despite the horse’s quirks. “Neville is genuinely not wired up quite right,” laughs Spencer. “Before he goes to sleep, he packs his mouth full of bedding and sucks on it like a pacifier, and he gets the hiccups if he’s anxious, but he’s an absolute sweetheart and very kind.”
