HIDDEN DANGERS
My horses have excellent shade and shelter provided by the magnificent trees that border their field – oak trees, I should add. I’m well aware of the dangers they pose for horses, so every autumn I fence off the areas surrounding the trees, rake up the fallen acorns and dispose of them appropriately. There seem to be more acorns this year than last year – and far larger than I’ve ever seen – so much so that lots of owners on my local Facebook groups are asking what to do about them. While it’s great that they’re seeking advice, we all need to remember that acorns affect our horses’ health every year, not just in ‘freak’ years like this one – so be aware of what’s in your horse’s field and manage it accordingly!
